Title: The Rebel
Author: Muccamukk
Rating: PG
Word count: 100
Pairings or characters involved: Stephen and Jack.
Character to give rum to: Nagle, so he can cause more angst (and to take the edge off that last flogging).
Notes: Movieverse, I have only read one book so far. This is my first foray into dribble. Sorry that it’s not in answer to the challenge. I hope Nagle still gets his rum.

“I can only afford one rebel on this ship.”

Is that all I am to you? A rebel to be afforded? No, I’m also the surgeon with the damned annoying hobby. The lubberly civilian, ignorant of the your maritime world.

I know you expect me to respond with a caustic remark. You need to hear that it is still a game between us. Of late, our contests have gone too far (or come too close). The only words I can think to say would end them forever.

My Joy, you are the only creature that can wound me beyond speech.

Poor Stephen! And poor Jack, too, in that scene, the way Stephen talks of the service. This is very nicely done.

Thank you all. That particular plot bunny has been gnawing on my ankle, since I first saw the movie. But I couldn't figure out how to make it long enough, thank God for Dribble :-D

I'm thinking of adding something from Jack's PoV, or perhaps finishing the scene from where it ends in the movie ("You’ve come to the wrong shop for anarchy, Brother"). But it will probably be too long for here.

Oh, does anyone know what Jack says as he makes the weevil pun? "There! I have you! (can't catch it)! Did you not know that in the Service, one must always choose the lesser of two weevils?"

I think he says "You're dished, completely dished"

According to a rather ancient copy of the Oxford Dictionary it means 'baffled by superior strategy' or when it is used in the passive sense it means 'be done for'.

I'd argue that there's one more creature who can wound him beyond speech, but that's later than you've read.

Stephen does seem a bit tired of the squabbling, in that scene, doesn't he. Very nice.

Where is your icon from, Muccamukk? And how come I'm not there right now?

This is home sweet home. My brother took this pic and I love it. She looks like a castle from that angle. As to why you're not there, there are a few access issues around that one. How much do you like boats?

And I do know about the other creature, but it's way slashier if we ignore her. (Oh god, I can't believe I said that. I swore I'd never write slash. YOU PEOPLE ARE CORRUPTING ME!)

Boats are my life. No access trouble from THAT.

Ah, but you were corruptible.

Nicely formed! Like this quote...
My Joy, you are the only creature that can wound me beyond speech.
except that Diana would also qualify in that category. *grin*

Quick technicality note, just so you know for future reference: The title "Mr." would only be applied to officers on board, naval or warrant. Otherwise, you would only use their last name. Thus, Nagle would just be Nagle as he is not an officer.

Ah, thank you, I was wondering if that was right. I shan't do it again.

I suppose I was corruptable, though I am perfectly happy to continue to blame it on you lot (especially cruisdirector, whose wonderful story Admiration started my mind down this rather dubious path, thnks for that, by the way).

Hee hee! I understand. Seems a lot of people lean that direction, and some of the writings are quite nice!

I, however, very much doubt I will be corrupted to the slash with this particular set of characters, especially for Aubrey. Maturin perhaps, since he speaks of pederasts or sodomites in a very neutral tone most of the time, not in such a bitter and judgemental way as Aubrey does. Aubrey lives life by the Articles Of War in which sodomy is punishable by death. I just can't bring myself to think he'd embrace such a thing, even in the privacy of his intimacy with Stephen. If there hadn't been discussion of it in the books, including very clear reactions by those discussing it, perhaps I could lean a little more toward the slash myself.

In the "real" world, I doubt it very much too. However, I haven't read the books (other than Far Side of the World) and thus remain ignorant of such dicussions. I'll let you know if they change my mind.

Oddly ehough, I've never really liked slash in genres where it would be more likely to occure, I've certainly never considered writing it.
