Subject:First Real Book Drabble
Time:08:58 pm
Current Mood:stressedstressed
Title: Lost and Found
Rating: PG
Word count: 100
Pairings or characters involved: Stephen and Jack
Character(s) to give rum to: Mr. Pullings
Author and notes: An answer to Challenge #9. What Stephen might have been thinking during that first meeting.

Stephen followed the music with a desperate intensity. If he focused on each note, perhaps he could forget everything else. He had to concentrate; there were so many memories competing for his attention.

He tried to close his eyes to the distraction, but when he did, he saw them. Her face came to him first, of course, but there were others. All those brave, Irish fools, who had fought for hope and died for nothing, haunted him still.

He could not lose himself though, could not forget who he was, not with that great fool flailing about next to him.

And he should be damn grateful, too. I suspect Stephen would have lost himself permanently if it weren't for Jack.

I'm being deliberately obscure about "her." I've heard others talk about some sort of Dark Lady in Stephen's past, but I haven't read that far yet.

I don't doubt it. Jack's rescue operation begins well before that night in Mahon.

This is lovely! Stephen's acting exactly as prickly as a depressed person would: life just rubs him up wrong in every detail. It's a wonder he allowed himself to get attached to Jack so very quickly. Maybe he sensed in Jack a savior.

Ironically, their first meeting was in Mahon as well. SO that was that night in Mahon :-D

I don't think that Stephen could help letting Jack in, it's one of those irresistible force meeting a not-quite-immovable object type of things.

It's a perfect explanation for an unreasonably violent temper... pain like that will break free of its own accord. And yet, one can't help but be grateful for Jack's presence, for a myriad of reasons.

Oh, this is wonderful -- have wondered what was really bothering him, because clearly it wasn't just the annoying guy next to him or he wouldn't have invited said annoying guy out for chocolate so quickly the next morning.

Well, I won't be on the west coast of Canada before Easter anyway. *g* We are on opposite coasts and I am quite south of you! But if you are ever in the Washington-Baltimore area, let me know!
