Title: Peace of Mind
Rating: PG
Word count: 100
Pairings or characters involved: Jack, Stephen and a monster
Character(s) to give rum to: Mr. Pullings
Author and notes: An answer to Challenge #9. A silly little thing that crawled into my mind and demanded to be written.

“Brother, I would suggest you refrain from movement of any kind.” Stephen’s voice was steady and calm.

Jack tried to do as he was told. His muscles twitched as the doubloon-sized spider ambled further up his arm. He had put his hand a pocket of the banyan, looking for rosin and finding this monster instead. Stephen had apologised profusely, claiming to have forgotten it was there.

The doctor approached cautiously, bow in one hand, grass cage in the other. “Handsomely, my dear, you mustn’t frighten it.”

It had not occurred to Jack to worry after the creature’s peace of mind.

MAWHAHAHAHAHA! I think that is the best one yet! Poor Jack...I volunteer to comfort him after his frightening ordeal.

I think you may have to fight for him, there seems to be some doubt as to whether the spider was put there accidentally or not.

-raises eyebrow- Well... it is nice to be loved (actually, I had a similar rolling-on-the-floor reaction when the bunny bit me).

That reminds me. I think we need a genre-specific name for plot bunnies, like "mini-Nazgûl" in LotR. Plot cormorants, perhaps?

I think you may possibly be confusing mini-Balrogs and Nuzgûl, but no matter.

I too like ghazalah's plotwombats

I'm not sure, there were mini-balrogs of course (I should know, I adopted Islildur) and there WERE some sort of Nazgul thing that acted as a plot bunny. Weren't they called mini?

Henceforth, I shall use the term Plot Wombat.

No, they were Nuzgûl. I remember because I found the etymology endlessly interesting- it was a misspelling, and Miss Cam thought it looked a lot like "nusse", the Norwegian for "bunny".

Ah, thank you. I'm not a brilliant speller (as you've no doubt noticed), so I tend to miss things like that entirely.

Words for bunny:
Latin: lepus
Spanish: conejo/conejito
Greek: κουνέλι (kouneli)
Irish: coinín
French: Lepin

I like the idea of Jack just casually putting his hands in Stephen's pocketses. Oh yes, I do.

Charming, and very funny. A tight little drabble, with a strong opening and finish.

Thanks for writing!

Hee! Makes a delightful bookend with Cruise Director/Ashinae's "Spider Bite"!

Stephen is such a wanton. ;-) He keeps saying he feels no sexual desire, on account of the laudanum. But you know, and I know, and we all know, he's a big fat liar. *g*

"O, chaste as the newfallen snow am I." pffffffft!

Thank you so much! I love that piece, though I'd quite forgotten about it until you mentioned it. I hope she doesn't mind.

I wasn't actually thinking of Stephen's motives when I wrote this, except that he's probably more interested in studying the spider than the fact that it's scaring the hell out of Jack. I was thinking of that scene in M&C where the Snake comes into the bedroom and Jack jumps on a chair. But now that dirtier other minds suggested it, it seems obvious.

LOL, did he actually SAY that? I wonder what he thinks all those erotic dreams are then.

No, he doesn't actually say that. I'm practising on you. *g* But he is dreadfully chaste, and if not for his adventures here and in Perfect Duet, I'd be concerned.

But he does observe at some point that since quitting the laudanum (one of its uses is to kill sexual feeling) he's all WRRRAAWWWWRRRRRRR. So very WRRRAAWWWWRRRRRRR, in fact, that he considers using it again just to put himself out of his misery. *veg*

Practising for WHAT!?! -thinks about it- Never mind, I've decided that I don't want to know.

Well, I'm glad that he's getting some outlet then, that much repression can't be good for a man, especially not ones as agnsty and depressed as Stephen.
