Time:11:56 pm
Current Mood:peacefulpeaceful
Title: The Gift
Rating: PG
Word count: 100
Pairings or characters involved: Stephen, Woman
Character to give rum to: Mr. Pullings
Author and notes: An answer to Challenge #11. Something that occurred to me as I thought of the smell of Irish air. I still don’t know who she is, but I’ll read more books soon.

It was not what Stephen was looking for, but when he found it, neatly folded in the bottom of his sea chest, he quite forgot his original purpose. He touched it reverently, caressing the soft wool as he brought it to his face. It smelled of Ireland: grass, sea air and sweet peat smoke. He could just find a hint of perfume. Without even having to close his eyes, he saw how the sun always shone in her hair. Her laugh rang out over the creaking timbers. He used the scarf to dry his face before hiding it away again.

How like Stephen... to hide the scarf away, along with the memories. Poor dear.

This is lovely -- the description of the scents is so evocative.

FYI, we don't learn much more about Stephen's first love, ever. I've spotted her named as "Mona" just once, but that's it.

I love the soft wool and peat smoke -- beautiful details! *sighs*

Last time I was in Ireland, it smelled like coal smoke and cow shit most of the time. However, that was in the fall when they were fertilizing the fields, and there wouldn't have been coal smoke back then. Peat smoke has to be one of the nicest smells though.
