Subject:Hiatus
Time:12:17 am
Title: Hiatus
Rating: PG-13
Word count: 100
Pairings or characters involved: Stephen/Jack
Character to give rum to: Mr Pullings
Notes: For challenge #9. I imagined this taking place in the castle in Post Captain, but I suppose it could be any time.

Six days and five nights later, Jack’s moans and inarticulate cries fell suddenly into silence. With one last great sigh, he ceased the fevered convulsions with which Stephen become bitterly familiar.

That last breath was the doctor’s as well. For one, long moment, he found himself petrified. He knew he should reach out, search for a pulse, but his hands remained clutched about the rosary.

Jack’s chest rose; Stephen heard a whisper of breath, immediately obscured by his own exhalation.

He touched Jack’s face then, not caring that his hand trembled, and brushed back the loose strands of golden hair.

Thank you. I'm quite happy with this one.

I need to read more of the books before I write a longer story. I can't get the books because I can't afford them new, can't find them used and there's a wuit list at the library. It takes two months to get each one.

I see what you mean about the books. What a waiting list!I will keep my fingers crossed for that and for the day when you will be able to write longish stories.
btw. I would be happy with a longish version of this drabble

*.....* I didn't breathe myself for a second there!

Vivid snapshot of a huge, silent moment.

Thank you for including the rosary! *pervs on Pious!Stephen*

I just had this image in my mind of Stephen sitting by Jack for days and nights, unshaven, eyes red. As a doctor there is nothing more he can do, so he just sits there, listening to the fever take his friend and praying. And then...

I thought of you when I put the beads in.

Oh my God, really? *totally unworthy*

The waiting must be horrible, horrible. The poor dear, and in his own beloved castle, too. I wonder what he would have done if Jack had died there. Bury him on the grounds? Send for Jack's father? How desperately lonely it all would be.

Damn. Brilliant detail- very, very good depiction of the sort of seizing terror he'd have felt. Bravo, Mucca! :D

Wow, that was excellent! Great characterization of Stephen, too. I held my breath there for a second myself!
